Brompton G Line Electric – Battery firmware issue

My beloved G Line Electric had a battery issue this week.

Looks like a firmware update failed to complete on the battery, and that it was stuck in some sort of reset loop.

The top row of lights on the battery (all five) were stuck blinking. I could adjust the assistance levels, and those lights changed appropriately, but the “lights” button did nothing. Putting it on the bike the lights stayed flashing, it seemed to connect to the app ok, but offered no actual assistance to the bike.

Brompton support rather curtly told me I needed to take both the battery and the whole bike into an authorised dealer. Fortunately I live quite close to one, so popped it in there – and 24 hours later they called me to say it was all now working OK.

Glad I lived near a dealer, and thanks to Ken Fosters Cycle Logic in Chorlton for the great customer service. Even though the bike is obviously in warranty still, there was still a (£25) charge for the repair. As a new customer of Brompton, have to say I find that a little disappointing – as this botched firmware update certainly wasn’t my fault.

Not sure how common this is, couldn’t find much about it online hence me posting this here – picked it up today and had a lovely cycle about though, so all seems to be working OK again.
